Kumana Under Canvas
Couples,
Families
This private mobile camp is pitched deep within the remote wilderness of Kumana National Park, or positioned in some of Sri Lanka’s least-visited reserves, including Maduru Oya, Horton Plains, and Gal Oya.
Created for travellers who value exclusivity and immersion over conventional hotel comforts and observation from a distance, it places you directly inside key wildlife zones, far from Yala’s busier blocks.
Birdwatchers will be drawn to the extraordinary diversity around Kumana Villu, a vast, reed-fringed wetland alive with migratory birdlife. Families with older children and groups of friends will appreciate the fully hosted, intimate safari experience in a location few visitors reach.
Riverside tents, lantern-lit evenings and early morning safaris create a sense of true wild seclusion, with the reassuring polish of an experienced safari operator behind the scenes.
The camp kitchen is remarkably capable for such a remote setting. Meals are planned around the seasons and your preferences, from fragrant Sri Lankan curries cooked over open flames to a selection of Western and Middle Eastern dishes.
Barbecue evenings are a highlight: quality meats and fresh seafood sourced from Arugam Bay, grilled under open skies and served by lantern light.
Tea and coffee are always available, and the open bar is there when you return from safari, whether for a well-earned sundowner or a relaxed evening by the fire.
The Rooms
The camp is made up of a few spacious, river-facing tents set within a private site allocated by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Each tent is thoughtfully arranged in three sections. At the front, a proper bedroom space with real beds, relaxed seating and fans powered by solar energy. A central dressing area offers hanging storage, bathrobes, towels and luggage racks. To the rear, your bathroom has a vanity with running water and a flushable RV toilet provides welcome practicality. Outside, a private bucket shower is prepared on request by your butler; simple, but deeply atmospheric under open skies.
Power is solar throughout, with device charging available in each tent.
