Sri Lanka is rightfully celebrated for its converted planter’s bungalows in the hill country, and this is one of our absolute favourites.
Set at 1,000 feet above sea level in a working tea and rubber estate, 10 minutes from the provincial market town of Kegalle and only two and half hours from the airport, Rosyth Estate House is far more accessible than almost all of the other bungalows in the tea-growing region.
Rosyth suits couples, families and friends happy to move between the estate and the veranda through the day: a walk or mountain bike route through the tea terraces with staff to guide the way, a treatment at the spa pavilion, a cooking class or a yoga session, then the pool for whatever’s left of the afternoon before Kandy or Pinnawala tempt anyone wanting a day away from the estate.
The kitchen sources locally and specialises in home-style Sri Lankan cooking, with the chef flexible on what’s asked of him. Dining is communal if you want company, or separate if you don’t, in keeping with the wider decision to run the house like a home rather than a conventional hotel.
The Rooms
The exceptional quality of the refurbishment has meant that the bungalow has maintained its original 1926 design and style. There are 10 individually designed rooms all scattered around the property, some in the original house. All are tastefully decorated and in keeping with the atmosphere of the property. We love the private terraces in some of the suites, perfect for a pre-dinner gin and tonic watching the sunset over the hills.
The traditional design is extended into the large living and dining rooms, the small library and the two verandahs, where there has been a deliberate avoidance of plush mod-cons. The house does not have air conditioning, but at this altitude, the air is cooler, and the building is open and airy.
