Hidden in the hills of Haputale, this beautifully restored 19th-century tea planter’s bungalow offers a luxurious place to stay – and spectacular scenery. Trust us, the panoramic views of its surroundings – 4,000 hectares of cascading tea plantations stretching out as far as the eye can see – will blow you away.
Thotalagala is located in the southeastern corner of Sri Lanka’s emerald hill country, so you’ll get a taste of rural life here. The estate is connected to Dambatenne, one of the most well-known tea estates in Sri Lanka (created by Sir Thomas Lipton himself in 1890).
The hotel’s garden is very well-kept and spacious, with an infinity pool facing the mountains – the perfect place to relax or enjoy a cup of tea with a view in the mornings. Inside, you will genuinely feel like you’ve stepped back to the turn of the century, thanks to the original fireplaces, traditional furniture and cigar room. The staff are incredibly welcoming, and there are even butlers to look after you.
The dining room is centred around a large table – ideal for communal dining – and the chef whips up great-quality, hearty meals. There’s no set menu here, as the butler provides personalised dining options (a real highlight).
The Rooms
The seven themed suites are inspired by the people who shaped the history and development of the province. All of the inviting rooms are spacious and comfortable, suiting both couples and small families.
If you’re seeking a boutique luxury hotel with plenty of character while staying in Sri Lanka’s hill country, then Thotalagala is the perfect place for you.
