A converted manor house, within a short drive of Colombo Airport, UGA Riva is a lovely place to stay for your first or last night in Sri Lanka.
The property is run by UGA Escapes who are well respected for their small selection of top-quality properties across Sri Lanka such as Ulagalla in the Cultural Triangle and Chena Huts at Yala National Park.
UGA Riva is a 180-year-old house surrounded by a 5-acre coconut palm estate, a refined and secluded environment perfect for a spot of R&R. If you’re keen to explore beyond the property, Negombo’s fish market, lagoon and beach are only 10 minutes away too.
Originally the treasured home to six generations of a prominent Colombo family, UGA Riva has been extended over the years by various artists and creatives. Many distinguished guests have stayed at the house including Mahatma Gandhi, who planted a tree in its gardens. The building and its manicured grounds serve as a subtle reminder of a former era with pillared verandahs, arched doorways, and a blend of colonial and traditional Sri Lankan décor. The restaurant is one of only a few fine-dining spots in the area and meals can be taken indoors or outside amongst the tropical gardens, or by the generously sized swimming pool.
The Rooms
There are just 7 guestrooms here – three Deluxe, three Superior, and one suite. Every room has plenty of natural light and is well-appointed with high-quality furnishings with incredibly comfortable beds, high quality linen, and large ensuite bathrooms. Although classic in style, the rooms have all the mod cons you’d expect including WiFi and aircon.
Though the property is ideal for a first or last stop on your Sri Lankan adventure, staying more than just one night will allow you time to really appreciate the charm, history, and atmosphere of the property and its grounds.
