The city is a real cultural gem to explore, it served as the Sinhalese Capital – defying Portuguese and Dutch rule for three centuries before being taken by the British in 1818. Kandy has a very unique character, maintaining its sense of tradition whilst incorporating a distinct colonial footprint.
Start by journeying to the Royal Botanical Gardens, famous for its dazzling variety of orchids and its resident colony of fruit bats. Move on to visit the Garrison Cemetery – housing the graves of the first European planters and troops, their stories remembered to this day. Then travel to St. Paul’s Church, an incredible piece of Neo-gothic Victorian Architecture. Finally, finish for lunch at Queen’s – Sri Lanka’s oldest Hotel.
