Sri Lanka and the work of Geoffrey Bawa
This holiday takes in Sri Lanka's varied highlights with a focus on the work of its most famous architect Geoffrey Bawa.
Visit the country estate, home, and lifelong project of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Spanning 15 acres at the edge of Dedduwa Lake in Bentota, Lunuganga is a fascinating reflection of Bawa’s design style, integrating nature and local themes with modern elements.
Bawa purchased the estate in 1947 and spent 40 years transforming the former rubber and cinnamon plantation into an idyllic garden paradise. The estate has been open to visitors since he died in 2003.
Every aspect of the grounds has been meticulously crafted and curated, with pathways leading to stunning views, sculptures, and gardens. The house is now a boutique hotel and no longer open to visitors, although you can enjoy lunch at the open-plan restaurant with views of the lake and gardens. The tour also includes a visit to his brother Bevis Bawa’s home. Here, you’ll find family photos, a collection of artwork, and another beautifully landscaped garden.
Visiting Lunuganga is more than just a walk through a tranquil and beautiful garden. It’s an immersive journey into the world of Geoffrey Bawa and a testament to Sri Lankan heritage.
