Sri Lanka tour

The South Coast, Sri Lanka, Galle

Essence of Galle

aerial view of galle fort

Start your morning at the local market in the company of one of our friends from Galle.

You’ll shop for vegetables and the day’s fresh catch, before heading to their home where his wife will guide you through traditional southern cooking methods. It’s an authentic way to understand both the ingredients and the rhythm of local life.

After lunch, stroll through Galle Fort at your own pace. The cobbled lanes, colonial-era mustard walls, and boutique cafés paint a picture of the city’s past and present in harmony. You’ll feel as though you’ve slipped into another time.

For those keen to venture beyond the Fort, there’s the option of a gentle cycling tour through nearby villages. Ride past checkerboard paddy fields and gurgling streams, stopping to try your hand at making “hoppers” – a much-loved Sri Lankan tea-time snack.

What You’ll Do:

  • Explore Galle’s bustling local market with a resident guide

  • Learn to cook Sri Lankan dishes in a family kitchen

  • Wander through the historic Galle Fort at your leisure

  • Cycle through tranquil rural villages

  • Try making traditional hoppers with a local cook

The Birdlife of Sri Lanka

Spend two weeks travelling through Sri Lanka’s rich and varied natural environments on a quest to encounter some of the 500 bird species that have been recorded here. Your expedition will take you into the lush forests of central Sri Lanka’s hill country and the dry national parks of the south via the lowland rainforest of Sinharaja.

An expert birding guide will be on hand to help you identify some of the rarer endemic and migratory species, and each hotel has been selected to optimise the experience. Though the trip is designed around the island’s birdlife, there is plenty of time to take in many of its other charms, such as its food, culture and warm welcome.

Weerawila Bird Sanctuary

Discovering some of the 200 bird species in the Weerawila Bird Sanctuary, including the Majestic Junglefowl, Ceylon Woodshrikes, and Great Cormorants.
