Highlights of East India
Contrasts of Kolkata, the waterways of the Sunderbans, the Buddhist culture of Sikkim and the mighty Himalayas in one incredible journey.
Generally known as the Calcutta Botanical Gardens, these 109 hectare gardens is a great place to find a little peace amidst the noise and bustle of Kolkata.
These gardens were originally set up by an officer of the East India Company to identify new plants for commercial value, and also to grow spices for trade, which make them an important place in the history of tea cultivation.
The main attraction today is an enormous 250-year-old banyan tree, which some say is the biggest in the world. There are also fine collections of orchids, bamboo and palms.
