Essential Rajasthan with the Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal combined with rural Rajasthan's impossibly romantic desert forts, dramatic scenery and incredible wildlife.
One point of the ‘golden triangle’ and justly famous for its magnificent sites, there are several ‘must sees’ in Japipur which you’d be crazy to miss. Amer, or Amber Fort, is one of them It is a truly marvellous example of Rajput architecture, with fairytale terraces and ramparts that are reflected in the Maota Lake below. The walls and ceilings of its royal halls are inlaid with intricate ivory, mirror and glass mosaics and hung with exquisite wall paintings.
As well as the fort you’ll want to visit the City Palace Museum to see fine examples of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal art, the Jantar Mantar observatory, built in 1726 AD, and of course, the elaborate Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, a strange building constructed for the women of the palace, behind which they could view the street festivities without being seen. The City Palace Complex is still home to the royal family and is a magnificent and imposing end to your tour.
