Perched on the banks of the River Periyar in Kerala, Hornbill Camp is surrounded by lush green lowland rainforest, home to hundreds of rare and endemic bird species.
There is plenty to do on and around the river. Kayaking is lovely here, especially upstream through the suspension bridge and into the gorgeous inlets just off the river. You might even spot elephants on the banks in the late evening. Additionally, cycling trips through the countryside lead past farms, spice cultivating villages, through forests and over undulating hills. By far the most popular pastime is birding, and Hornbill Camp is widely known for its spectacular birding opportunities. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is opposite the campsite on the other bank of the river.
Twenty tents are much like tent houses, semi-solid in construction and all featuring a double fly roof. Seventeen of them are situated on the river. They all come with balconies, ensuite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and electrical outlets. There is air conditioning in the room in the evenings only and no television. Dining is best enjoyed at the waterfront restaurant, and the cuisine is ethnic Keralan buffet style, all prepared with locally sourced spices.
This is a relatively rustic camping choice, but an extraordinary one, mainly if bird watching is on the agenda. Be aware that children under five can’t stay at Hornbill Camp, but the site is very family-friendly all the same.
Eco/Adventure - This category covers gorgeous lodges in the jungle, comfortable safari camps and dreamy, but simple, beach cabanas. These places defy conventional categorisation: what is communing with nature to one person may be terrifying bugs to another! Many of these places are very comfortable and the service generally of a very high level - but please read the website review carefully and/or talk to us and be sure to have understood what you are letting yourselves in for!
