One of the very few private lodges in a core zone of a national park in India, the Periyar Forest Bungalow is shrouded in thick, dense jungle. If you’re seeking a remote experience, a digital detox or to simply be surrounded by nature, you’re guaranteed a memorable stay here.
You can explore the forest on foot or by jeep with the excellent local guides who bring the stories of the forest, history and plantation to life (don't walk off alone though, you never know what animals might lurking around the corner!). In addition, a walk through the cardamom plantation provides an insight into how the spice is grown and harvested. In the evenings, you'll head out on night safaris to spot nocturnal wildlife. Elephants and leopards do roam the surrounding forests, but they are extremely elusive! Back at the lodge, savour the delicious home-cooked food and enjoy a spot of birdwatching from the veranda.
There are just three large rooms, which keeps the experience peaceful and intimate. They are very basic - no-frills here - but they are comfortable nonetheless and have private, simple en-suite bathrooms.
Keep in mind that the remoteness may be too much for some; it’s located over an hour from the nearest town down a bumpy track, which is only accessed by an off-road vehicle. But, it’s the perfect place for the more adventurous traveller seeking a totally off-the-beaten-track experience where you can completely switch off and immerse yourself in the beauty of the forest.
