Family Himalayan Adventure

An idea for your holiday

Perfect for the Easter holidays, this off the beaten track family adventure will challenge your family to complete a journey together on foot – but with fantastic support, relatively soft trekking conditions and, of course, a comfortable bed to return to at the end of each day.

Highlights include:

  • Experiencing an overnight train experience north from Delhi to Almora
  • Trekking through the Himalayan foothills with views of the big boys in the distant horizon
  • Staying in converted village houses – for an authentic but comfortable local experience
  • Exploring the incredible wildlife in Corbett National Park
  • Marvelling at the thrills and spills offered by India’s mighty Ganges river – with rafting and more

You will also have time to relax at the gorgeous Atali Ganga and soak up the atmosphere of Rishikesh, India’s famous spiritual destination. As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can change this holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

This is a sample itinerary which we will tailor to suit you. Prices are dependent on destination, flights & dates but ETG holidays always include the following:

DAY 1 Outbound flight

Overnight flight to Delhi

Day 2 Delhi

You'll be picked up by tuk-tuk with your guide to explore New Delhi; Lutyens enduring legacy to India. Following the presidential house and India gate, visit the famous Connaught Place, but instead of shopping, you'll head behind the scenes to see some surprising sites hidden in plain sight in the centre of New Delhi. A gentle introduction to a hectic city.

Day 3 Delhi

Today you will explore the narrow, crowded streets of Old Delhi with our walking guide who will give you the inside track: bargain with the vegetable and fruit sellers, try your hand at the ancient sport of pigeon-flying, visit the wholesale flower market and spice market and revel in the fragrances of their fresh produce. End the walk with tea at one of the very few remaining Havelis (old aristocratic mansions) in the city, with an incredible open roof terrace looking over the Jama Masjid.

After returning to your hotel, there is time to relax and refresh before Step, your guide, arrives to take you to the train station to board the Ranikhet Express, for your overnight journey to Kathgodam.

Day 4 Almora

Wake up refreshed after your overnight journey and meet your chauffeur, who will be with you for the rest of the trip. You will drive with him to Almora through some stunning scenery, and the last part of your journey is a short 10-minute walk to your lodge.

Day 5 Almora to Thikalna

After a leisurely breakfast and a short walk, drive to Almora town via the charming Chitai Temple. After exploring the hill station and its fascinating bazaars, drive to Thikalna. Here, at 2100m, you can walk along a forest path lined with oak and rhododendron trees for an incredibly stunning snowcapped Himalayan view. This short and easy walk ends at a village house which has views of the massif of Nanda Devi East and the other Himalayan peaks of the same range. You will have time to meet the family, enjoy a home-cooked dinner and unwind for the rest of the day in this glorious setting.

Day 6 Thikalna to Ganghet

Your walk today takes you to Bridh Jageshwar mountain temple complex, surrounded by rhododendron and pine forests, before climbing down to the ridge of Naini and the Temple of Jageshwar.

After a picnic lunch, your walk continues uphill, via the village of Gurdabaj and through some ancient cedar forests, before you finally reach Ganghet, for a well-earned rest around the bonfire.

Day 7 Ganghet to Bhimtal

Drive this morning to Bhimtal, along the scenic Kuccha road from Bhimtal Lake. This part of the Kumaon Lake Region, home to a large variety of flora, fauna and aquatic life, has always attracted birdwatchers, butterfly-collectors and nature lovers as well as writers in search of solitude and city-dwellers seeking to renew their spirits.

Days 8 - 10 Corbett National Park

Another scenic drive today to Corbett National Park, before spending three nights in your lovely jungle lodge – a fantastic base for exploring the incredible wildlife here and a much-needed place to relax. There are safari drives included and plenty of other activities such as trekking and bird watching – though by now your family might well be most interested in relaxing by the pool!

Days 11 - 13 Rishikesh

This morning you're off to your resort just outside Rishikesh. The peaceful location on the banks of the Ganges has always attracted ascetics, gurus and yogis and more recently, New Agers and yoga devotees following the Beatles to spiritual enlightenment.  Now, however, your family might be most interested in the adventure aspects – water rafting, kayaking or picnicking on the banks of Ganges, and even the high wire course at the hotel.

Day 14 Rishikesh to Delhi

You will be collected from Atali Ganga and transferred to Delhi. The drive will take around six hours, including lunch and scenic stops.

Day 15

 Onwards to your flight home.
