Luxury & Adventure in Rajasthan

An idea for your holiday

If you prefer the great outdoors to cities, then this could be the itinerary for you. In this holiday, you'll enjoy the enormous sky and timeless qualities of India’s most famous state; visit sleepy villages meet tribal nomads and look for extraordinary wildlife.

While there is time to explore Delhi (briefly), Jodhpur, and Udaipur (particularly the magnificent forts and palaces which have justly given Rajasthan such a reputation), this itinerary is all about escaping to a side of Rajasthan that very few tourists see.

Highlights:

  • Marvel at magnificent Mehrangarh Fort and Jodhpur, ‘the Blue City’
  • Traverse the Thar Desert by jeep and stay overnight in a mobile camp – you'll access regions that are impossible to visit in any other way
  • Enjoy wildlife and luxury in equal measure in Jawaai in Rajasthan’s most remote and wild corner
  • Take treks from the extraordinary marble Jain temple at Ranakpur to the awe-inspiring Kumbhalgarh Fort, both iconic sites that seem to have appeared from nowhere!

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style, and expectations. We can adjust the timings and inclusions, and if you wish to spend more time exploring Jaipur and other cities, we can tailor-make this itinerary to suit. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

This is a sample itinerary which we will tailor to suit you. Prices are dependent on destination, flights & dates but ETG holidays always include the following:

  • International flights (if required)
  • Guides, drivers & their tips
  • Accommodation
  • Specified meals & snacks
  • Your immersive experiences
  • Internal & regional transfers

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart and fly to Delhi.

DAY 2 Delhi

Arrive in Delhi and transfer to your hotel in the heart of New Delhi. After arriving, freshening up and lunch you will be taken off to explore Delhi. Old Delhi is the ancient walled city, capital of the Mughal Empire. Explore by cycle rickshaw and see the formidable Red Fort and other spectacular remnants of the glorious Mughul phase in Delhi’s history. Make your way through Chandni Chowk, filled with twisting lanes and crowded bazaars.

Return to New Delhi by the very modern Delhi Metro system, a marvel of advanced engineering in one of the most crowded parts of India. In the evening we'll suggest some superb restaurants for you to try.

DAY 3 Delhi to Jodhpur

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Jodhpur. On arrival, meet your chauffeur and vehicle for your short transfer to Rohet.

The sleepy village of Rohet is a short scenic drive from Jodhpur and a popular stopover: several famous writers are reputed to have found Rohet a great place to let their creative juices flow. It’s also the home of the Bishnoi people and the beautiful Blackbuck antelope.

Day 4 Jodhpur & Rohet

Today you will take a privately guided tour of Jodhpur (about 45 minutes' drive from Rohet), the second-largest city in Rajasthan and nicknamed the "Blue City” after the many houses in the old town painted in various hues of blue. This incredible site is best seen from the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, the largest fort in Rajasthan, which looms over 100m above the city. Stroll through the winding alleyways of the Old City and visit the numerous palaces, temples and havelis that are scattered throughout.

Back to Rohet for a relaxing later afternoon in blissful peace. You might like to do a cooking class here and enjoy the spoils afterwards.

Day 5 Rohet

Today you can take a three-hour horse safari, guided by one of the hotel’s riders. You’ll pass through the countryside and villages where you’ll get a taste of village life and see herds of blackbuck antelope and nilgai. The horses are rare Marwaris, the indigenous breed of Rajasthan. Non-riders can enjoy the same safari by jeep.

Days 6-8 Thar Desert

After checking out of your hotel this morning, you’ll go completely off the road for an incredible three-day adventure across the Thar Desert. As well as experiencing the excitement of riding a jeep in this environment you’ll have the opportunity to witness a different and rarely seen side of India in terms of genuinely remote villages and wildlife, inaccessible to anyone but pastoral farmers and intrepid travellers. The day is about the journey as much as the destination: traverse the countryside on dirt tracks, camel trails, through dry river beds, and even make your tracks if necessary. You’ll also have the chance to take the wheel yourself if you’d like to, guided by experienced local guides.

You’ll stay overnight in a mobile safari camp, with comfortable, spacious tents, portable bathroom facilities and a gourmet meal under the stars.

Days 8 & 9 Jawai

Your desert safari finishes with a journey deep into Jawai, a remote wild region of rural Rajasthan. Jawai is a fantastic place to enjoy an incredible variety of local wildlife, including leopards and flamingos, and to see the region's photogenic nomadic herdsmen.

The wildlife in this region is incredible, and you’ll have a chance to explore during early morning and late afternoon safaris. In between, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy Jawai Leopard Safari Camp where there is no compromise on luxury and comfort, a treat after your desert adventure.

Day 10 Jawai to Ranakpur

After breakfast today, you depart Jawai Leopard Camp for the drive towards Ranakpur. The journey will take approximately 1.5 hours until you arrive at Mountbatten Lodge, where you will stay for two nights.

This afternoon relax and enjoy the magnificent colonial-style lodge.

Day 11 Ranakpur & Kumbhalgarh

A four-hour walk will take you through the reserve forest between the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the magnificent Kumbhalgarh Fort and the Ranakpur Temples. Very few people venture through this area, making it a great place to get away from the crowds while still exploring these two incredible landmarks. A guide and forest guard will accompany you as you walk through the forest on a marked track. Although you’re unlikely to see any other people along the route, you will see animal tracks and many birds.

Day 12 Ranakpur to Delwara

A two-hour drive this morning to Delwara, a small and peaceful village in the Aravali Hills, 28km outside of Udaipur.

This afternoon you’ll visit Udaipur for the obligatory but pleasant boat trip on Lake Pichola.

Days 13-15 Delwara and Udaipur

After fully exploring Udaipur, the most peaceful and romantic of Rajasthan’s great cities, you’re free to explore Delwara at leisure, or relax and enjoy the magnificent hotel and beautiful surroundings.

Day 16 Fly home (or stay!)

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
