Located in the royal palace complex in Kandy, the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is one of the most important religious sites in Sri Lanka. This famous temple is home to a significant Buddhist relic - the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha.
Said to have been snatched from the flames of the Buddha's funeral pyre in 483 BC, it was almost 800 years before the sacred tooth was hidden in the hair of a princess in India and smuggled into Sri Lanka. The tooth was moved and hidden for many years before finally settling in Kandy, where it has been worshipped at the temple ever since.
Over the years, the tooth has gradually grown in importance as a symbol of sovereignty, and it was generally believed that whoever had custody of the tooth, had the right to rule the island. Today, the temple, where the artefact is enclosed within seven beautifully decorated golden caskets, acts as a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankan Buddhists who will pay at least one visit here during their lifetime.
Monks still conduct worship in the inner chamber of the temple, performing pujas, or rituals, three times daily. Traditional drumming and chanting can be heard throughout the area when the rituals are taking place - an atmosphere which is truly awe-inspiring.
Every Wednesday at the temple, the precious relic undergoes a symbolic bathing ceremony using Nanumura Mangallaya, a herbal liquid made from scented water and fragrant flowers. This holy water, which is shared amongst those present, is thought to contain strong healing powers.
The Festival of the Tooth, Esala Perahera, takes place every year in either July or August. The main procession, where the tooth is paraded around the surrounding streets, pays homage to the relic and draws large crowds of visitors and locals alike.
Now a World Heritage Site, the Temple of the Tooth boasts intricate wood carvings, colourful works of art and impressive, traditional architecture. The structure is nestled amongst lush greenery and sits alongside the expansive Kandy Lake.
As is expected within most places of worship, it is important to remember and respect the rules that are in place when visiting, this includes:
All bags that enter the temple will be subject to a search by security at the entrance.
You will want at least an hour to explore this important Buddhist site, admire the design of the buildings and pay a visit to the relic itself.

One of my highlights was visit to Temple of the Tooth. Laky knew exactly where to be during the ceremony to get best from it and I enjoyed being part of the crowd.

Temple of the Tooth, loved it but a disappointment that we didn't attend any of the religious services.

We were a bit disappointed with the Temple of the Tooth as after all the hype you don't actually see it.
