Essential Sri Lanka with East Coast
The east coast has calm seas and the island's best weather from May-September, making it a fantastic option for a summer holiday.
This 1930's former tea planter’s house on the western slope of the Knuckles foothills couldn’t be better placed for enjoying spectacular sunsets and panoramic views of Sri Lankan tea country. Just an hour’s drive from Kandy and within easy reach of the cultural triangle, it provides both practicality and a sense of getting off-the-beaten-track.
Offering great value and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Mahatenne House is ideal for the active traveller. It sits within 75 acres of the working Ashburnham Tea Estate, which visitors are welcome to explore, and is close to two impressive waterfalls with natural pools for swimming. There is also a swimming pool with a slide at the hotel, a slightly shabby tennis court and mountain bikes to hire.
The house is managed by English expats, Carrie and Andy, in addition to their 4 friendly dogs. It has a large, wood-furnished living area and seven good-sized bedrooms. Home-cooked meals are arranged in consultation with guests, who can opt for the Sri Lankan chef’s traditional curries or for English alternatives. Meals are taken either at the large dining table or on the terrace with lovely views of the surrounding estate.
Highlights of the cultural triangle, such as Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya can be easily visited on day trips. This peaceful and unique house offers a welcome alternative to staying in the cultural region and a great opportunity to get off-the-beaten-track.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
