Back of Beyond Pidurangala, Sigiriya

In a dense forest that probably hasn't been touched for hundreds of years lies this unique set of bungalows and cottages. Pidurangala is one of the most unusual and magical properties in Sri Lanka.

The main bungalow has three large bedrooms with en-suite semi-outdoor bathrooms. One of the rooms can be converted into a triple while the master bedroom has a mezzanine level with an extra double bed, which is ideal for families. The bungalow sleeps a maximum of nine people. All rooms have ceiling fans, comfortable beds, mosquito nets, verandas and modern bathrooms with hot and cold water. Airy living space is surrounded by cushions and there is a dining table where they serve up delicious Sri Lankan food.

There are also three separate one bedroom cottages, all with en-suite bathrooms and designed in the same aesthetic style with a blend of modern and sustainable architecture that blends beautifully into its surroundings. Every effort has been made to protect the natural habitat, with the foundations and roofs adapted to curve around trees.

The property is surrounded by beautiful forest and is a bird enthusiasts paradise. All of the excursions of the cultural triangle are easily accessible and nearby are several lesser-known archaeological sites, of which the staff will be happy to show you around. The nearby Pidurangala rock is a great climb and offers spectacular views of Sigiriya and the surrounding countryside. Village life goes on around the property and there are some great walks as well as some excellent lakes for swimming.

Pidurangala offers a great alternative to the larger traditional style hotels in the area and is excellent value for the service and facilities they provide.
