Owned, run, and operated by passionate naturalists, this is a great choice for wildlife enthusiasts. Close to the quieter Katagamuwa entrance, the camp is rustic enough to feel suitably ‘safari’, but the spacious, swanky tents will keep even picky souls happy. Each tent has its own plunge pool, perfect for relaxing in after an early morning safari.
Ceylon Wild Safari camp is nestled in a patch of former farmland on the edge of Yala National Park. With only six tents and expert naturalists and guides, Ceylon offers a secluded stay and unique wildlife experiences.
As well as elephants, sloth bears, and water buffaloes, Yala is known primarily for its high-density population of leopards. There is no shortage of hotels and resorts geared towards visitors wanting to catch a glimpse of the leopards, but Ceylon has truly differentiated itself from the pack.
For starters, the camp is located near the lesser-used Katagamuwa entrance to Block 1 of the park, meaning less early morning jeep traffic when setting off. It also provides access to Blocks 3 and 5, which give a very different experience far away from the crowds of Block 1.
Secondly, the camp is run by the original founders, who also happen to be wildlife fanatics and act as guides for guests. Their passion and knowledge of the area are limitless and give every tour an extra level of insight and immersion hard to find elsewhere. They also have an excellent standard of photography equipment available and the expertise to help budding photographers hone their skills and leave with incredible photos.
Lastly, the six permanent tents are spacious, modern, and comfortable. Each has a large outside decking area with a private plunge pool – perfect for a relaxing wallow after an early morning safari drive. Guests can choose al fresco dining on their terrace or in the communal area, where they can mingle with other guests and discuss the day’s encounters.
Ceylon Wild Safari is a haven for wildlife lovers. With the level of knowledge and expertise available, guests are assured an incredible safari trip and an unbeatable overall Yala experience.
Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
