The Galle Face Hotel Colombo enjoys an exceptional position in Colombo, facing the sea and the expanse of seaside promenade known as the Galle Face Green. Like an ageing aristocrat, The Galle Face has an air of faded grandeur: the cocktails are still served on the beautiful veranda as the sun sets, by courteous old-world waiters.
The suites are undoubtedly some of the largest in the world, with elegant antique furniture, but the carpets are somewhat faded, and the beds have fallen below the modern 5-star standard. Nonetheless, this is an experience unmatched anywhere in the world. The sea-facing standard rooms are charming, though the service and finish are idiosyncratic.
