Wilpattu Leopard Trails offers a comfortable base from which to experience this national park’s wildlife. It's great for both couples and families wanting an authentic safari experience, with top-notch guides and fantastic service.
Managed by the Leopard Trails group, accommodation is in bespoke tents with large beds, fans and separate bathrooms with hot water. Meals are served in a spacious main dining tent; a mixture of rather delicious Sri Lankan and western dishes. There's also a lovely lounge tent available for kicking back and relaxing.
It must be mentioned that potential travellers should consider the jungle location of the safari camp. There can be insects around, and you are likely to be entertained (or even kept awake if you forget your earplugs) by the sounds of animals, simply because you are in a very natural environment. You are not in the park itself, so you are well protected from larger animals.
The park itself offers a chance to spot leopards, elephants, sloth bears, deer, buffalo, and many species of birds. Driving through the landscape is an experience; there’s an array of environments – from dense forest, to open sandy watering holes, and to open grassland – the sheer diversity is spectacular.
Wilpattu is one of Sri Lanka's lesser-visited national parks, and we think Leopard Trails offers a very comfortable base from which to explore and experience the incredible, diverse wildlife it has to offer.
Deluxe - This is our first really 'upmarket' category. It might be a beautiful tiny hotel with very limited facilities or a 5* resort hotel with all the trimmings; but any hotel in this category will be a well-run establishment with very comfortable rooms, a strong service ethos and excellent food.
