Jetwing Vil Uyana, Sigiriya

This eco-hotel and spa was built on land formerly used for 'slash and burn' agriculture. This land was transformed into a seasonal wetland linking lakes and paddy fields - a haven for wildlife. 

The 25 luxury villas that make up Vil Uyana are built around the main lake. There are four categories of rooms - Paddy Chalets, Water Chalets, Marsh Pavilions and Forest Villas- differing slightly in form and design. Most come with a private plunge pool and are a hybrid hybrid between traditional eco methods and sleek, modern design. Some are raised on stilts. Others are spread over two floors, with a bathroom, showers, and plunge pool on the ground level, as well as the bedroom and balcony above. The assortment of thatched roofs, matted fibre walls, crystal clear glass, waxed woods and polished cement are used to create a unique property. Raised wooden walkways link the villas around the paddy fields, where traditional grains are harvested using traditional methods.

Upon arrival at the property, guests can choose their mode of transport to the room - walking on foot, by electric buggy or by boat along the waterways. A library, information centre and fine dining restaurants are located around a large swimming pool in the centre. There is also a fitness centre and an excellent spa complex offering a variety of treatments. The fine food can be served anywhere - from in your room to out under the stars.

The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya can be seen on the horizon, providing a splendid backdrop to this elegant, luxurious resort.
