We crafted this Sri Lanka highlights itinerary to include our most exceptional local experiences and our favourite tried and tested boutique hotels, strung together at a gentle pace. It's the ideal itinerary for first-time visitors who want to see the main sites but, knowing the country as well as we do, we also ensure you’ll explore in a little more depth than you would on a run-of-the-mill tour package.

In brief, you’ll not only explore the sights of the Cultural Triangle, but you’ll also get an insight into typical rural life. You’ll take in the beauty of the lush hill country in a less-explored part of this region and encounter abundant wildlife from the least busy part of Yala National Park. There is also time to relax in a quiet spot on the coast, learn about the influences that have shaped the country’s culture and discover the fascinating story of Colombo.

Highlights Include:

  • Board Sri Lanka’s most iconic train for an unforgettable journey through the scenic, tea-clad hills
  • Go on safari with your specialist driver, spotting wildlife such as elephants along the way
  • Enjoy a few days of relaxation away from the crowds, on the palm-fringed beaches of the southern coastline
  • One of our top team of private chauffeur-guides throughout your trip

As with all our holidays, this itinerary is just a starting point. We can tailor it completely to suit your budget, pace and style. To find out more about how this suggested itinerary could inspire your holiday, start your journey by calling us today.

DAY 1 DEPART UK

Depart the UK on your flight to Colombo.

DAY 2  THE NOTARY’S HOUSE   FARM LIFE

On arrival at Colombo Airport, meet your chauffeur-guide and transfer to your first gorgeous boutique hotel. Recover from the flight, enjoy some great hospitality, a swim, or a walk around the gardens.

DAYS 3- 5  CULTURAL TRIANGLE  HISTORY & RUINS

You’ll be chauffeur-driven to the Cultural Triangle to discover the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, and to experience rural life. Travel around the scenic farmland by various modes of transport - by tuk-tuk, bike, on foot, or even a tractor. With your guide, you’ll learn first-hand about the history of the area and the life and work of villagers.

DAYS 6 & 7 KANDY     TEMPLES & COUNTRYSIDE

You’ll be driven onwards to Kandy. Here you’ll spend two nights in Sri Lanka’s second city, steeped in ancient history and legend. On your second day, enjoy our signature excursion and discover the contrasts of Kandy, from the scenery to the culture and traditional Sinhalese artwork.

DAYS 8 & 9 RURAL ADVENTURES

Jump aboard Sri Lanka’s most iconic train ride and wind through the spectacular tea clad hills towards Haputale. On arrival, your driver will meet you with the car and your luggage to complete the journey by road.  Check in to your hideaway accommodation and enjoy the lovely pool and beautiful views. While here you’ll have time to appreciate the scenery with walks in the hills and to local waterfalls.

DAY 10 UDA WALAWE NATIONAL PARK  WILDLIFE SPOTTING

Your driver will transport you to Uda Walawe National Park. Your accommodation is an excellent base from which to explore: the park offers the most consistent elephant sightings in the country as well as being well known for its raptor species and variety of other wildlife - even leopards if you are lucky.

DAYS 11-13   THE DEEP SOUTH   BEACH & RELAXATION

Head down towards Tangalle to enjoy some of the least busy of the south’s palm-fringed beaches. You’ll have a few days to spend at your leisure, during which you can rest and enjoy your hotel or perhaps explore inland where you’ll find temples and idyllic villages amidst the tropical vegetation.

DAYS 14 & 15 COLOMBO  COLONIAL HERITAGE

Spend your last two days in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital and home to a delicious array of street foods, brilliant shopping opportunities, and fascinating history. On a tuk-tuk tour, you’ll weave through the busy, commercial area of Kotahena, where you’ll find remnants of its colonial past and former glory. Take to the streets on foot with your guide as they open up the cultural heart of the city to you, giving you a real insight into the influences, traditions, and cultures that have shaped the city over the centuries.

DAY 16: FLY HOME

Your driver will drop you at Colombo airport to depart on your flight back to the UK.
