Why We'd Choose Sri Lanka Over a Big Birthday Party, Every Time.
There's a strong case for celebrating a milestone birthday with a trip rather than a party. ETG co-founder Melissa Nicholas did exactly that for her 50th, and wouldn't have it any other way. Here's why...
ETG co-founder Melissa Nicholas spent her 50th in Sri Lanka with family and friends, staying at three very different hideaways. Here, she explains what made it so memorable and why she'd choose it over a party at home every single time.
When I first travelled to Sri Lanka, and when Experience Travel Group began, I was still in my 20s. How I’ve ended up writing about turning 50 is a mystery to me.
Like many milestone birthdays, it prompted a bit of reflection; not so much about getting older, but about how quickly life moves. More than twenty years of ETG, and then there are my actual kids, Edie, now 15 and Charlie, 13. Before long, family life will revolve around GCSEs, A-levels, revision schedules and all the other commitments that come with teenagers becoming adults. Family holidays won’t disappear, but they will become harder to organise.
So when my 50th birthday approached, I wasn’t particularly interested in a party or presents. I wanted an excuse to gather family and friends for an adventure, and Sri Lanka felt like the perfect place to do it.
The Kind of Celebration that Feels Relaxed and Personal
Our trip began at Rosyth Estate House, a restored tea planter’s bungalow in the central hills, where I celebrated my actual birthday. One of the things Sri Lanka does exceptionally well is hospitality; not the polished, overly choreographed version that can sometimes make occasions feel slightly uncomfortable, but genuine warmth from people who take real pleasure in helping guests have a wonderful time.
Neil and Farzana, who own Rosyth, and their team managed to make the day feel special without making a huge fuss of it. There was yoga, time in the spa and a cooking class with the children.

That evening, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner beneath the stars with Farzana’s family biryani recipe and views stretching across the surrounding hills.
Of course, my friends and colleagues at ETG couldn’t resist adding a few surprises of their own. I’ve often joked about the ridiculousness of hotel floating breakfasts; I’ve never understood how anyone can comfortably eat eggs, sausages and coffee whilst floating in a swimming pool. My 50th birthday apparently presented the perfect opportunity to test my theory.
With Neil and Farzana enthusiastically joining the conspiracy, a floating breakfast arrived beside the pool. Toads joined me in the water, the tray repeatedly drifted out of reach and I can confirm that eating an egg whilst treading water is every bit as challenging as it sounds. I remain unconvinced by floating breakfasts.

But that’s exactly the sort of story that becomes part of a celebration. The evening concluded with a “Melissa-themed” quiz organised by our friends Christian and Meriel, followed by the presentation of a trophy recognising my “Lifetime Achievement in Niche Music Knowledge (Est. 1976)”.
Those sorts of moments are much easier to come by when you’re somewhere that encourages people to relax, connect and really enjoy themselves.
It’s a Destination that Works for Everyone
For me, one challenge with milestone birthdays is deciding who to celebrate with. A romantic trip for two can be wonderful, so can gathering a larger group… but then you need to find a destination that genuinely appeals to everyone.
Sri Lanka excels at this.
We travelled with our friends Christian, Meriel and their son Fin, and one of my ETG co-founders, Tom, joined us for part of the trip. Throughout the trip, everyone found their own favourite moments.
At The Mudhouse, in the rural north-west of the country, our days quickly settled into a rhythm of cycling, swimming in the lake, exploring the countryside and eating exceptionally well.
Edie became so detached from normal teenage priorities that she managed to leave her phone behind when we left. We only realised after arriving at our next destination, resulting in a five-hour courier journey across Sri Lanka to reunite her with it. (Slightly annoying at the time, but a teenager forgetting about their phone feels like quite a compliment to a place.)

There’s So Much Variety in One Trip
Many milestone birthday destinations make you choose between culture and beaches, adventure and relaxation, food and wildlife. What I loved about Sri Lanka was never having to make those choices; we comfortably enjoyed them all.
Within a single 10-day trip, we’d moved from the hills around Rosyth to the rural landscapes surrounding The Mudhouse and then on to Tekanda Lodge on the south coast. Each stop felt completely different.
At Tekanda, our days were spent by the pool, enjoying yoga sessions with Sala, exploring Ahangama surf town and seeking out excellent restaurants along the coast.
The contrast between the different parts of the trip never felt forced. Instead, it felt as though Sri Lanka naturally offered exactly the right experience at exactly the right moment.

The Best Celebrations Leave You With Stories
Looking back, what strikes me most is that very little of what I’ll remember has anything to do with turning 50. I won’t particularly remember the date itself. What I’ll remember are the stories.
Farzana’s biryani. Swimming in the lake at The Mudhouse. The floating breakfast. The quiz. The people along the way. Yoga with Sala. The chef at The Mudhouse who sent us home with fresh curry leaves from the garden. One of the team at Rosyth telling about his regular pilgrimages to Adam’s Peak. The German couple we met at Rosyth who joined us at The Mudhouse and became part of our gang for a few days. Bumping into my cousin and her family on the south coast. Edie’s phone making an unexpected solo tour across Sri Lanka.
Milestone birthdays aren’t really about marking an age. They’re about bringing together people who matter, and I’d struggle to think of a better place to do that than Sri Lanka.
