Coral Reef Snorkelling, North Male Atoll
The Maldives, Central Islands

Info : Coral Reef Snorkelling

99% of The Maldives is underwater and one of the best way to explore the country's rather incredible geography and wildlife is by plunging in. The country is thought to have been formed some 60 million years ago by a string of submerged volcanoes forming the atolls and reefs you can explore. The Maldives is the 7th largest coral reef system in the world with an incredible level of biodiversity.

A snorkeling experience underwater is as fun as it is informative. You'll be able to spot and ask your guide about the various species that make the reef their home. In certain areas you may notice a certain level of bleaching, this is when the coral turns white and is not as colourful as the rest of the reef. Your guide will be able to explain how and why this happens and threat it poses to ecosystems under the water. If you're very lucky you may spot a turtle and follow it along the currents across the reef.
