Taj Exotica, South Male Atoll The Maldives, Central Islands
Among the super-luxury Maldives resorts, Taj has a number of distinguishing, stand out features and as such is generally extremely popular.
Firstly, it is near Male, but faces away from the busy North Male Atoll. So although it is only a short transfer from the airport, it feels relatively peaceful and remote. On the minus side, the odd plane passes overhead. This is not Heathrow however and the disruption is limited.
Secondly, it is extremely peaceful and quiet. The island is well designed to ensure maximum privacy. Laid out over a thin stretch of beach, the island feels beautifully peaceful and relaxed. The vegetation is attractive too and the infinity pool is beautiful, especially at sunset, facing west as it does.
Thirdly, the restaurant is solely a la carte and is heavily Asian influenced - though extensive enough to ensure guests do not get bored. The Indian chefs grasp of both eastern and western cuisine ensures each meal is a culinary treat and the lack of any buffet at all, even at breakfast, is refreshing for guests on full board. The only warning is that wine is expensive, which is something to think about perhaps, if you intend to drink a good deal! There is also a fine dining Mediterranean restaurant as an alternative.
The rooms are superb and unashamedly luxurious. The dark woods lend a traditional feel to the over-water villas and there is none of the chic minimalism of some other resorts. The television is huge, the sun deck spacious and the pool if it has one; glorious. In my opinion the deluxe lagoon villas with pool are great value.
The service is extremely attentive, more so perhaps than at other resorts at this level. This suits some and not others, though it is always high level and very professional. The spa is excellent and there is the usual range of water sports.
A great resort for fine food, indulgence and privacy.
The resort is a 20minute launch transfer from Male International Airport - any time of day or night.
Ultimate - There are very few hotels we would describe as 'ultimate'. Hotels in this category must have absolutely everything anyone could want and really be aiming for the stars. These hotels generally go well above and beyond and they would always be at the very top end of the market. These are for clients looking for that extra special place.
