Laos, Luang Prabang and The North
Info : Mandala Ou
Mandala Ou was completely revised in late 2013. It's in the stunning setting of Nong Khaiw on the Nam Ou river and just a short 10 minute cycle ride to the centre of this small Laos village, or a couple of minutes by car.
The setting is idyllic and you relax as soon as you enter the grounds. There are 10 rooms, of which 6 face directly onto the river and 4 look over a well maintained garden and pond. They all are similar in size, comfortable and have ceiling fans. There is no AC but for the majority of the year it's not needed in the northern part of the country. The rooms are decorated in traditional Lao style.
The major advantage to this hotel apart from its location, is the small, but perfectly formed infinity pool which is great for the hotter months. The owner has also built a great river deck.
All round this is a lovely hotel; a great place to escape Luang Prabang or, if going northwards, to explore off the beaten track Laos. If you are used to high end luxury then it's not for you, but the setting, food and ambience will appeal to most.

Superior - This is what we would describe as our standard category. These will be decent 3/4* hotels providing a really good level of service. We would generally expect them to be providing a little something extra, in terms of character, guest experience or facilities too.
Matt really listened to what we were looking for and our itinerary was a joint project making good use of his knowledge and experience. We were really impressed by how well most of the hotels and guides were integrated into their local communities and were particularly impressed by Pong who guided us in the north of Laos. He really went the extra mile to help us meet and talk with local people and he was clearly well known and liked in the villages we went to!
