In the 90s and 00s, Vang Vieng was a mecca for backpackers, mainly down to the now infamous ‘tubing’ on the river, combined with low-priced accommodation. Since the activity was effectively banned in 2012 (or at least sanitized to the point of losing its appeal), the area has begun to return to its original state as a picturesque countryside town with many scenic nature spots just a short drive away. It’s still busy enough - the town is small and can be explored on foot but has plenty of places for a meal or drink; it’s all just a bit more civilized now!
