Sri Lanka, East Coast
Info : Surya Lagoon
Found just a few hundred meters back from Nilaveli Lagoon, Surya Lagoon is a small converted house set within eight acres of peaceful grounds. This peaceful spot, with its variety of tropical birds, is a great value alternative to the larger hotels on the beach while providing a little more style and comfort than many of the guesthouses and cabanas in the area. Whilst there is no villa pool, the property is just a short walk from the beautiful Nilaveli beach.
The house itself is stylishly furnished in a simple and traditional manner. The four rooms are spacious, comfortable and well maintained. The rooms do not have air-conditioning but the stone house is open and airy, which keeps the inside temperature down. The bathrooms are clean and well equipped with modern fittings and hot and cold water.
The hotel is situated on the other side of the main road from the beach and is centrally located so it’s easy to access various hotels and restaurants in town. The hotel itself provides a range of local dishes however it’s worth note that whilst they do serve fish and sea food they do not provide a meat option.
Though the staff may not speak perfect English they are exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Comfort - This is our lead in category. There will generally be a no frills approach and while some will be characterful, some will do exactly what it says on the tin - provide a clean, comfortable and good value place to spend the night. These places are normally 3* hotels.
It was clear that Nick was immensely knowledgeable about Sri Lanka and we felt his overall service to assist in identifying the type of holiday we required was superb. All places we stayed in were brilliant but, for novelty value, the Mudhouse was one of the most memorable. From pick-up to departure we can only say that out guide and driver was absolutely magnificent. Always helpful, smiling, knowledgeable we became good friends over the two weeks.
