Family Classic Cambodia
A two-week journey through Cambodia with temples, kayaking, cycle rides and beach time.
Chef Nak’s Homestay is situated in a beautifully renovated wooden stilt house, surrounded by lush gardens and worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh despite only being a forty-minute drive from the city centre. They only host one group at a time, so you’ll have it all to yourself too. There are three spacious rooms, a private garden and outdoor cooking area, and a saltwater pool to enjoy, as well as the delicious food prepared by Chef Nak and her team. As a way of supporting young people in the arts, local student musicians are employed to play traditional music as you dine.
The hosts are avid collectors of Cambodian antiques, plenty of which are tastefully worked into the décor; from vintage ice-shaving machines to traditional art, the design showcases the country’s culture whilst still feeling fresh and up-to-date. Each room has its own distinct style and comes equipped with both a fan and air-conditioning, a large double bed, a seating area, and an ensuite bathroom. The gardens are lush and green, and you will get the sense of being in a remote tropical oasis despite the lively village outside the grounds. They also have their own tuk-tuk if you want to get out and about, although we’re not sure why you’d want to leave!
A stay here is about much more than the accommodation, though and you’ll quickly get to know your host and hear the story of how she became such an expert on traditional Khmer food and where her research has taken her. If you want to get hands-on with your food, Chef Nak also offers private cooking classes too. You’ll learn the secrets of Cambodian favourites such as fish amok and shrimp fritters, and you will be sure to come away with an incredible insight into Cambodia’s cultural heritage (as well as a pleasantly full stomach!). After the class, there is plenty of time to chat or take a swim before enjoying a delicious evening meal with cocktails. The property is also close to Koh Dach, otherwise known as ‘silk island’, which makes for a scenic day of cycling if you’d prefer a more active day.
For anyone visiting Phnom Penh, we highly recommend a night or two at Chef Nak Homestay, either on its own or combined with a stay in the city. Whether you are interested in food or want to enjoy spending time in a serene and friendly environment, the homestay offers a unique experience and an insight into Cambodian culture.
Homestay - What we mean by 'Homestay' is generally a large family owned house, still occupied by at least some members of the family. Interaction with guests is encouraged and is in fact unlikely to be avoided! These places always have bags of character are usually highly charming and can provide a fascinating shortcut towards understanding local life a little better. Facilities can range from the luxurious, to pretty basic and meals are generally taken as a group and served in the local style rather than from a menu. The service is almost always fairly quirky and idiosyncratic. Great fun.
