Kerala & The Maldives in Style
Two weeks travelling through Kerala in top-notch hotels, relaxing and interesting in equal measure.
Today you will take a guided tour of Fort Cochin and Mattancherry in local style – on board an auto rickshaw. You can explore the lesser visited lanes and alleyways that aren’t accessible by car, and really get under the skin of the city. Kochi was the first European colonial settlement in India and was occupied alternately by the Dutch, Portuguese and British before becoming the first state to join the Indian Union post independence in 1947. Some of the sights you may encounter include; St Francis Church, the oldest European church in India; and the Dutch Palace, with its ornate décor, lovely courtyards and traditional Keralan architecture. If time permits you can stop at one of the oldest of the few functioning synagogues in the city – Paradesi Synagogue – and the spice market.
