Shalimar Spice Garden, Periyar

The aptly named Shalimar Spice Garden is set amongst lush jungle, showing off the rich heritage of Kerala and blending European and Indian living. A wooden bridge connects the property with the outside world, while it borders the Periyar National Park, making it an ideal place to stay if you want to connect with and be surrounded by nature.

With a mountain stream flowing amongst the greenery and cottages, you’ll find the atmosphere is tranquil and climate cooler than lower land Kerala. Enjoy your meals in the Falling Leaves restaurant, served buffet style, while in the Red Lounge, you can sit by the fireplace with a drink. Many activities are on available, such as ayurvedic treatments, bird-watching, hiking, safaris, yoga and guided tours in the surrounding areas.

Cool off in the swimming pool, or if you’d like more privacy, opt for one of the two pool villas. In total, there are 22 thatched cottages and rooms scattered around the property, ensuring peace and privacy. They all include sit-out areas and may be quite simple but are nevertheless comfortable and have character. Note that there is no air conditioning. However, the cottages remain cool year-round due to their design and canopy cover. Note that the entrance to the hotel is reached by way of a series of steps and a bridge.
