This small, laid-back town mainly serves as a portal town for those going hiking in the mesmerising mountains of the Shan State, but its lovely lazy atmosphere, quaint restaurants and friendly locals have made it an ever-increasing popular choice to spend a few days discovering the real, un-spoiled Myanmar. The town has retained much local authentic character, from the monks calling for alms every morning, to the bustling market that is definitely not set up for tourists. The town also has a few faded colonial buildings with pretty gardens practically begging to be lounged in with a drink and a local snack.
