This half-day trip allows you to travel out into the rural areas surrounding Yangon and to get up close and personal with the people using the train to go about their daily business. The train departs from Yangon Central Railway Station and slowly makes its way out into the suburbs: the trains are fairly old and do not offer a luxurious experience, but this is a fantastic way of meeting local people and observing a little something of their day-to-day lives. Local people are generally very friendly and curious to see foreigners travelling on their transport system, and so may well strike up conversation. You will also see streetfood hawkers with baskets and trays of snacks to sell to passengers waiting on the platforms.
An hour's journey out of the city brings you to Insein, about 20 miles from downtown Yangon where you disembark and take a stroll through a local market before returning to the city. The train takes around three hours to complete its loop.
You can include this experience as part of an Experience Travel Group holiday designed exclusively with you.
