Less Is More in Cambodia

Cambodia has been neglected as a holiday destination in its own right. Where else can you find some of the ancient world's most magnificent ruins, gorgeous islands and an immersive vibrant, welcoming culture in such a small area?

Exploring Cambodia in-depth needn't mean spending hours on the road. This is a suggestion if you want to get a feel for the "real" Cambodia at a leisurely pace. There are just four locations with minimised road travel between them. You'll have plenty of time to meet the people, taste the food, see the varied scenery and stay in some lovely hotels.

Highlights include

  • Explore the organic farm and experience the fantastic ethos at the Smiling Gecko project in the countryside near Phnom Penh
  • Spend time snorkelling, swimming and relaxing whilst based at an idyllic beach on tropical Koh Rong Sanloem
  • Explore magnificent Angkor whilst discovering the wonders of Siem Reap too.
  • Walk with Elephants at a sanctuary in a protected forest north of Siem Reap.

As with all our suggested itineraries, we can tailor-make your holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

Day 1 Depart the UK

Depart the UK on your overnight flight to Phnom Penh

Day 2-4 Farmhouse Smiling Gecko

Arrive in the capital city Phnom Penh but rather than stay in the city itself, you'll stay in the countryside at the wonderful Farmhouse Smiling Gecko. This is a sustainable boutique resort with an organic farm within the grounds. It offers a lovely place to stay and an experience where you can learn, cook, eat and explore whilst supporting the local community.

Day 5-6 Kep & Kampot

Next, you'll transfer south to your base in the sleepy city of Kampot. During your stay, there is time to explore Kampot itself, the surrounding countryside, and neighbouring Kep.

Kampot is famous for its pepper (some say it's the best in the world), and Kep is renowned for its crab. A meal at the famous crab market is a must in Kep, or take a food tour with a chef in Kampot. Explore Bokor Mountain and its surrounding caves or take it easy and stroll around the faded colonial buildings and the colourful boat yards.

Day 7-11 Koh Rong Sanloem

To Sihanoukville today, where you'll board a boat for the 45-minute crossing to Koh Rong.

Spend five days on a beautiful beach, relaxing, swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the local food.

Day 12-16 Siem Reap

Today it's a 1-hour flight from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap, where you'll spend five full days. Most visitors whizz through Siem Reap, but there is much to enjoy beyond the famous temples. Allowing time to get under the surface of the destination with time to enjoy the hotel pays dividends.

Angkor works brilliantly for all ages, but it's worth considering the planning. Typically we will arrange for you to explore the temples with your guide by bike or tuk-tuk and incorporate activities like quad biking in the countryside. Other options include an arts and crafts experience at a Khmer ceramics centre, an interactive food tour or an adventure walking with elephants in a protected forest.

An absolute must is an evening at the Phare Circus - an excellent activity that tells stories of Cambodian life through a blend of traditional and modern theatre. The circus employs disadvantaged young people and is a tremendous all-around initiative everyone will enjoy.

Another must is a visit to Kampong Phluk Village on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake,  known as the lifeblood of Asia. Here you'll explore the narrow channels by boat, learning about the unique way of life lived by the community who live over the water in stilted houses.

Day 17 Fly Home

Depart Siem Reap for your flight back to the UK

As every holiday is unique to you, prices vary. To give you an indication, our holidays typically cost between £4,000 and £6,000 per adult depending on trip length and time of year as well as the hotels and flights involved. We offer child and seasonal discounts. You can read our ultimate guide to holiday costs in Asia for more in-depth information.
