Tandjung Sari, Sanur

On an island brimming with hotels and resorts of all types and sizes, Tandjung Sari is one of the original boutique properties, with an interesting history dating back over 50 years. Opening back in 1967, it has since played host to many famous guests and is often described as Asia’s original boutique hotel.

This beachside retreat sits in a prime location along Sanur’s coastline and while the property has grown in size over the years, it has retained the serene atmosphere and effortless sense of style inherited from the founder Wija Waworuntu and his wife, Judith. It’s a tropical oasis with a sophisticated yet traditional Balinese design, combining simplicity, comfort and luxury. It’s the Bali dream in so many ways: dine al fresco in the restaurant by the sand, enjoying the authentic Indonesian food, or take a dip in the shaded saltwater infinity pool. As for the beautiful stretch of beachfront on your doorstep, you can relax on a lounger, swim in the calm waters and watch the sunrise over the ocean. 

There are 29 bungalows scattered around the gardens, each designed keeping the traditional Balinese style in mind with their high thatched roofs and charming decor like textiles, antiques and wooden furnishings. Some have sea views, others are set amongst the gardens, and there are a range of different options to suit both families and couples. With their patios, tropical plants, spacious rooms and opulent bathrooms, you’ll find it hard to leave your bungalow. 

It is close to the airport and while Sanur is busier than it was in 1962, the beach does not have the party feel of Seminyak or Kuta so it retains its peaceful, laid back vibe. The hotel works brilliantly for your first few nights introduction to Bali after a long flight, but also as a sophisticated beach option.
