Nestled in a breathtaking valley of rolling hills and paddy fields in northwest Vietnam, Mai Chau is about a four-hour drive from Hanoi and is becoming increasingly popular among travellers.
The district is also home to minority villages; it has been inhabited mainly by the Ban Lac People who settled in the area and now make up the largest ethnic population in the region. Whilst it has become more popular with visitors in recent years, the traditional way of life remains a key feature of the area and offers visitors an insight into the significant cultures of Vietnam.
There isn’t much to the town of Mai Chau itself, but the main attraction lies in its natural, scenic beauty. The charming Mai Chau Lodge overlooking a lake and surrounded by paddy fields is a great base from which to trek and explore. Otherwise, you may also need to stay here on route from the Laos border if you travel overland from Laos to Vietnam.
