Day-to-Day Itinerary : Original Adventures in Java & Sumba

Day 1 Fly to Java

Depart the UK on a flight to Yogyakarta

Day 2 - 4 Mesa Stila Central Java

After arrival at Yogyakarata airport you'll transfer by road to Mesa Stila, a retreat on a working coffee plantation in a beautiful, peaceful setting in central Java. This is the perfect place to recover from jetlag and ease into your Indonesian holiday whilst enjoying luxury facilities and panoramic views of Java's otherworldy mountainous, landscape.

There is an emphasis on wellness at Mesa Stila so you'll be able to enjoy spa treatments and yoga if you would like. But its a wonderful setting for a range of more energetic activities too, from trekking and cycling tours to easier guided morning walks around the surrounding coffee plantation, various complimentary activities are included during your stay.

Day 5 -7 BorobUdur

Only in Java do ancient man-made wonders sit against a backdrop of smoking volcanoes jutting out of lush green plains, and this part of the holiday is all about experiencing this unique aspect of Indonesia.

You'll journey by car with your guide from Mesa Stila towards Borobodur stopping en route to explore the slopes of Mount Ungaran w here you can ride by horseback to Gedong Songo, one of the most beautifully sited temples complexes in Asia. Continue on towards Borobudur, the single largest Buddhist monument in the world. During your time at Borbodur one of the highlights will surely be climbing up the monument to watch the sun rise or set through the stupas, whilst in the background you can see a mountainous landscape stretch out before you.

During your stay you will also have chance to immerse yourself in Indonesian culture with a visit to the Javanese village of Candirejo where you'll get to experience the timeless traditions of Indonesia first-hand. You'll also have chance to visit the Kraton (Royal Palace), and to explore the magnificent Prambanan Temple.

Day 8-12 Nihiwatu Resort, Sumba Island

You'll fly from Yogyakarta to Sumba via Bali.  Twice the size of Bali but with only a sixth of the population, Sumba is a beautiful island with untouched beaches and fantastic surf where many inhabitants still follow a quite traditional way of life. This is the ultimate get-away-from-the-crowd beach destination, like nowhere else you will have been before.

The resort itself is completely unique and barefoot-luxury style suites have been hand-built by local craftsmen around private pools and an idyllic sweeping bay. The location is a world-class surfing spot and you can enjoy snorkelling, diving or paddle-boarding tours. Complimentary land based activities include treks through the paddy-fields and adventures with the community, the local markets are a great place to really get into Sumbanese life with exotic fruit, chilli's, peppers and the islands cherised betel nuts all piled high.

Day 13 Fly home via Bali

On your last day in Indonesia, you'll take the one hour flight from Sumba back to Bali where you'll board your flight home. Alternatively we can arrange to extend your holiday with time in Bali.

Enhance your Experience+

Stop in Bali (either before or after your time in Sumba). A visit to Ubud works well with the rest of this holiday.

Visit Bali's coast before you fly home. Tugu Bali is a truly unique and lovely place to stay.

Customer Feedback
Six great and amazingly different hotels - we would happily recommend any of them. We had three excellent guides as well. And we lost track of the number of "Wow" moments. In addition to the obvious, including Paramban, Borobodur and Bromo, we would add our tour of the markets + rickshaw ride in Malang, and having coffee with Mr Rai at the Agung Rai Gallery in Bali. Our guide in Bali, Otok (?) was excellent at explaining local culture, and we left an offering at his family shrine.
