This holiday might not be for everyone. If you've ever felt that modern life is too hectic and that you might be too connected and ‘always on’ however, then this might be the trip for you. Get completely off the beaten track, off the grid and back to basics. In other words to connect to your travelling companions, to people you meet and the country, instead of the WiFi.

You will experience Sri Lanka’s beautiful scenery and culture without the need for any device, which will enable you to free your curiosity and discover what makes this country so unique. With a focus on nature and exploration of local cultures, this itinerary showcases the lesser visited side of Sri Lanka, and you will immerse yourselves in a setting where the digital world can be happily left behind.

Highlights Include:

  • Blissful boat safaris at one of Sri Lanka’s most exciting lodges: Gal Oya will connect you some extraordinary wildlife in a unique way
  • Kick back and enjoy some much-needed quality beach time and even take surfing lessons at Arugam Bay
  • Step back in time and marvel at the extraordinary sights of the Cultural Triangle.
  • Experience a completely different and fast disappearing way of life in the Knuckles Mountain Range – so off-grid, there is no road

The transport, with one of our fantastic team of chauffeur guides, is included throughout your holiday. Local guides are available when you need them, and there is space for you to create your memories too.

As with all our holidays, this itinerary is just a starting point. We can tailor it completely to suit your budget, pace and style. To find out more about how this suggested itinerary could inspire your own holiday, fill in the form below.

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo airport, Sri Lanka.

DAY 2 & 3 RURAL ANAMADUWA

Arrive at Colombo airport; you'll be met by your private chauffeur who will transfer you to your hotel for the next two nights, The Mudhouse; a simple, but strangely luxurious, off the grid countryside eco-hotel. Despite the remoteness of the location, the Mudhouse has an excellent array of activities to keep you occupied, such as bike rides, cookery tours, and kayaking. You’ll immediately feel like you’ve left the worries of modern life behind you!

DAYS 4-6 SIGHTS AND VILLAGES IN THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE

In the morning you will be picked up by your private chauffeur guide for the transfer you to your hotel in the Cultural Triangle, on the way you will pass ancient reservoirs and rural Sri Lankan countryside.

Over the next two days, you will explore the main sights on ETG’s signature tours.  You’ll experience the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, with an early start to avoid the crowds. Explore the Pidurangala Rock Temple, its ancient Sanskrit carvings and hike to the summit of the temple for stunning views of Sigiriya. Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and a local primate research centre and spot purple-faced langur and toque macaques monkeys. We’ll also take you to lunch in a secret but exceptional location very much off-the-tourist-trail.

DAYS 7 - 8 ON THE FARM

Transfer to Jim's Farm, a unique place to stay in the countryside, midway between the ancient sites of The Cultural Triangle and the city of Kandy. During your stay, there will be plenty of time to see the sights and to enjoy a farming village tour - learn about the exotic crops as you explore the farm, meet the farming families and taste delicious home-cooked food.

DAYS 9 - 10 TREKKING IN THE KNUCKLES

You will travel up the mountain through the clouds to Grandma & Grandpa's House in the heart of the Knuckles Moutain Range. The journey takes you through some incredible scenery with spectacular vistas. Leave the car behind for the next leg of the tour: you will travel on foot to the house, a part of the Abode homestay project. Here you'll enjoy a simple homecooked meal and lodging. A longer hike will lead you deeper into the mountain wilderness until your next overnight stay, where the washing facilities are a waterfall. Abode is an utterly unique experience for all the family and one you are likely to remember for a very long time.

DAYS 11 & 12  SAFARI SECRETS

Next, head to the country’s best-kept wildlife secret, Gal Oya National Park for a two-night stay at the beautifully designed eco-lodge. Home to Sri Lanka’s largest lake, you can encounter all manner of wildlife on a boat safari and by foot, including Asian elephants and a vast array of birdlife, far away from other tourists.

DAY 13-15 EAST COAST BEACH

Travel east from Gal Oya to the surfing and wildlife hotspot of Arugam Bay. The remote village is home to some of the best surf breaks on the island, but if you're not keen on surfing, there is plenty of wildlife and a glorious beach to keep you occupied. Spend time here relaxing in laid-back Sri Lankan style.

DAY 16 TRAVELLING WEST

Depart for Colombo on a short and scenic seaplane flight (alternatively, if you have a little more time to spare you could travel by road and include Yala National Park, Tangalle and/or Galle in your itinerary). When you reach Colombo you'll make your way to Gampaha, a relaxing rural region with coconut farms and pineapple plantations, a lovely area to spend the last night of your adventure.

Day 17 Fly Home

Depart Colombo for your flight back to the UK.

As every holiday is unique to you, prices vary. To give you an indication, our holidays typically cost between £4,000 and £6,000 per adult depending on trip length and time of year as well as the hotels and flights involved.
