Day-to-Day Itinerary : Wild Family Adventure in Sri Lanka

DAY 1 DEPART THE UK

Depart London Heathrow for Colombo, Sri Lanka.

DAY 2 Negombo

Arriving in Colombo, you’ll be met by your chauffeur-guide and private minivan. Head to Negombo for some relaxation by the beach, as you recover from your flight and acclimatise to Sri Lanka.

DAYS 3 & 4 Sinharaja Rainforest

Your chauffeur-guide will collect you after a leisurely morning for the drive inland and uphill to the last remaining virgin rainforest in Sri Lanka – the Sinharaja. On arrival you’ll be taking in your extraordinary surroundings.

The next day, we’ve included a full-day hike in the forest. Depending on your fitness level, there are circuits of 6km, 10km or 20km. You’ll see many of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species as you go around. The trackers are pretty good!

DAYS 5 & 6 uda walawe national park

It’s a fairly short but very scenic journey this morning to the entrance of Uda Walawe National Park.

You can relax, explore the area and enjoy the hotel’s facilities and pool on arrival, though if you are keen you could squeeze in an extra safari too.

Early the next morning is the best time to beat the other jeeps and have the park to yourselves. Uda Walawe is the best place in the country for seeing wild elephants up close and personal and if you’re lucky, you may also spot a leopard. Like most of Sri Lanka, there is a plethora of other wildlife to enjoy in the park also.

In the afternoon you may like to visit the elephant transit camp next to the entrance.

DAYS 7 & 8 YALA

From Uda Walawe, head to the deep south-east and Yala National ParkYou won’t be staying with the bulk of the tourists – this trip is much more interesting than that! We’ve got a much better idea up our sleeves – a real immersive wildlife experience where you can explore the relationship between elephants and humans in this remote, wild and beautiful region.

Of course we’ve included a safari too – with some superb top of the range trackers and naturalists provided by the lodge itself. You’ll enter the park via the much quieter Katagamuwa entrance.

DAYS 9, 10 & 11 gal Oya

Heading north from here, the journey to Gal Oya, Sri Lanka least visited National Park, takes 4 hours. Whilst you’ll doubtless enjoy the boating safari options into Gal Oya, your stay is much more about the lodge and the location. This is truly stylish jungle lodge living. You’ll enjoy the chance to relax and will settle in quickly.

You can do a range of local hikes into the wilderness around the park – guided by young naturalists, Veddha (Sri Lanka’s indigenous people) headmen and the lodge’s young staff.

DAYs 12 - 16  Pasikudah, THE eastCOAST

Head a little further to the north for some well-deserved R&R on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It’s a pretty high end hotel, as we think you’ll appreciate the mod cons after living in some of the remotest corners of Sri Lanka.

If a long wide sandy beach doesn’t entertain you, there is water sports too and plenty of dining options close by.

DAYs 17 & 18 Flight to Colombo

Drive to close by Batticola airport for your afternoon flight to Colombo. Be warned: the scenery can be spectacular.

On arrival in Colombo check into your hotel. We'll recommend a quality restaurant for the evening. The next day, the adventure starts again - though it's a semi urban one today - exploring the surrounding countryside around Colombo by bike. It's great fun and you'll meet lots of locals - in comparison to the scarcely populated regions you've spent time in previously.

This afternoon another treat is in store as you can take one of Colombo's famous city walks.

DAY 19 onwards FLIGHT

Time to depart Sri Lanka! Your chauffuer-guide will drop you back at Colombo airport for your onwards flight.

Enhance your Experience+

Take the beach stay up the next level with a stay in Sri Lanka's most exciting beach hotel: Cape Weligama. It's a new direction for Sri Lanka and with tremendous 2 bedroom villas, it makes a brilliant family resort.
