This suggested holiday itinerary combines a flavour of the wildlife of Malaysian Borneo with a beach holiday on the exotic island of Bali.

In Borneo, you'll visit Sepilok, The Kinabatangan River and Kinabalu Park; beautiful tropical forests where you’ll find a diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles. Explore exotic rainforest trails and take a river safari looking out for monkeys swinging in the trees and pygmy elephants bathing in the water. In Bali, it's all about the beach, although the island offers plenty more exciting pursuits if you prefer to keep active.

Highlights include

  • Journey by boat down the Kinabatangan River spotting elephants, orangutans and monkeys
  • Meet rescued orangutans at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
  • Explore Kinabalu Park with views of the majestic Mount Kinabalu
  • Learn to surf, explore markets, taste delicious food and enjoy a glorious beach from your resort in Bali

These are just a few highlights of what is an extraordinary and action-packed holiday.

As with all of our suggested itineraries, we can change this holiday to suit your budget, style and expectations. Find out about our exclusive ‘Journey Planner’ here.

Day 1 - Depart the UK

Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Kuala Lumpur

Day  2-3 Kuala Lumpur

You’ll spend two days in KL in a family-friendly hotel – with two-bedroom apartments available.  During your stay, there will be time to recover from jetlag in preparation for your Borneo adventure.  A guided walking tour of the city will give you a sense of its diversity and a chance to a sample some of the famously delicious street food.

 Day 4 Sepilok

A morning flight will take you straight to Sandakan where you’ll begin your Borneo rainforest adventure. On arrival, you’ll head to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary for the chance to meet rescued baby orangutans and learn a little about their plight. In the afternoon you’ll explore jungle trails and visit the educational Rainforest Discovery Centre. Here there is a canopy walkway offering views over the treetops, where you may be lucky enough to spot wild orangutans. Hundreds of bird species also live in the Sepilok forest so have your binoculars at the ready! The wildlife adventure doesn’t stop when it gets dark as nightfall brings the chance to take an exciting guided walk looking out for the nocturnal wildlife of the jungle.

Day 5 & 6 Kinabatangan

Today will take you onto the Kinabatangan River; the boat journey through mangroves, wetlands, and lush jungle provides plenty of opportunities to view wildlife including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, rare birds and maybe even pygmy elephants who are known to visit the river to bathe. Your jungle lodge has boardwalks into the rainforest so you can explore the jungle easily and immerse yourselves in its sights and sounds.

Day 7-9 Kota Kinabalu

Today you travel to Kota Kinabalu. Here you’ll stay on the beach at The Shangri La Rasa Ria just outside the city itself. There will be time to relax and enjoy the excellent facilities and take a tour of Kinabalu Park in the foothills of the famous mountain  The park is home to a whole host of flora and fauna including many beautiful birds and butterflies.  There is the option to go white-water rafting adventure on the Kiulu River available here too.

As an alternative to your beach hotel, you could choose to stay on the waterfront in Kota Kinabalu to allow for easy exploration of the city sights and night markets.

Day 9 – 14 Bali Beach

On arrival, you’ll be whisked away to your two-bedroom villa at the Royal Seminyak beach hotel.  Bali is a magical place with ancient history, rich culture, exotic beaches and stunning scenery, and this hotel is ideal for families with its range of facilities and a fantastic beachfront location. Seminyak has a great choice of superb places to eat locally, from beach shacks to high-end restaurants.
