Savannah Grassland Tour, Koh Phra Thong

Koh Phra Thong is a true hidden gem – a large but unpopulated island off Thailand’s west coast, around an hour's drive north of Khao Lak. The lack of commercialisation sets Koh Phra Thong apart from other Thai islands. There are no 7/11s, beach vendors, or jet ski’s anywhere to be seen. There’s no phone signal, patchy Wi-Fi, and even electricity is not guaranteed. This may not suit everyone, but it’s a godsend for anyone interested in truly switching off and relaxing in nature. Luckily, the island does have plenty of things to see and do, not least the wildlife and natural beauty of the beaches, forest, and savannah area.

Unlike most other islands in Thailand, Koh Phra Thong is flat. This has created a peculiar savannah grassland area slightly inland. On an early morning jeep tour, as the sun rises over the island, it could be mistaken for an African plain. The savannah is best explored at either dawn or dusk to avoid the full force of the sunshine. There are very few roads or cars, so an open-top jeep will be your tour vehicle, allowing you to observe plants and birds from a prime position. Expect to see a large variety of birdlife and maybe even some reptiles as they warm up or cool down for the day!
