Off the north of Koh Samui is Ko Pha-Ngan, surrounded by coves of warm turquoise sea. The island is well-known in Thailand for its fine, sandy white beaches lined with coconut trees.
While Koh Pha-Ngan was previously known as a backpacker hang out, there are now several well-priced, high-quality resorts. Once this island was only known for its party scene, but holidaymakers have uncovered an area thick with forests and beautiful beaches. It is home to several refreshing waterfalls, and the more adventurous can hike up the highest mountain, Khao Ra, which towers 625m above the island.
Many tourists here are keen to search for Sunrise Beach, which holds wild and frivolous monthly Full and Half Moon parties. For a more peaceful atmosphere, you can time your visit here with the days on the lunar calendar that don’t clash with the parties. In truth, though, the party scene can be easily avoided.
