Walking with elephants,
Thailand, North and East
Info : Walking with elephants
Trek into the wild to find elephants living in the forests north of Chiang Mai as part of a camping experience with a Karen hilltribe community. A pioneering project, set up by the UK based Mahouts Elephant Foundation, it's a brilliant way to see this majestic creature living naturally and in harmony with rural communities.
Camping for one or two nights lets you have the best experience trekking. Day trips from the village can also be arranged though should camping be a concern.
With an expert guide each day, you'll track the movement of the elephant herd and find them foraging together in natural surroundings. Try to spot matriach Thong Kam who is a wonderful and caring mother to her little baby sunti. You might also see Mario, a surrogate child to Thong Kam who loves to scratch his ears on the trees as he wanders through the foliage. He also loves a good mudbath and you can tell if he's had one recently by seeing if his back is all dusty.
You can also enjoy a spot of fishing in a river running through the forest, learn traditional weaving and have a go at harvesting rice in the paddy fields.
It's a brilliant experience for travellers wanting to do an 'elephant experience' in Thailand, authentically.

Every guide, every driver, every tour, every pick-up etc was brilliant... We always felt we were in harmony with local community, not a voyeur looking in... Jake in Chang Mai was amazing. But everyone was first class.
